The AIMS Admission Process
A stepwise guide for Singers and Pianists

Phase I. Auditions

The audition procedure, required repertoire, audition sites and link to register for auditions are on this website: Click on Audition Info.
  • After registering online for an AIMS audition, you will receive a Confirmatory Email with the link to a document, the Singers/Pianists Audition Questionnaire and Report. These are the instructions you will be given:
    1. OPEN and PRINT OUT THIS DOCUMENT.
    2. FILL OUT the questionnaire, your repertoire, attach a small photo and your one-page résumé. Your résumé should include competitions you have won/placed.
    3. BRING THESE ITEMS TO YOUR AUDITION.
    4. GIVE THEM TO THE AIMS REPRESENTATIVE.
The judge will use page 2 of the document to record the results of your audition.

For Recorded Auditions: register online, pay the audition fee and send these same items with your recording to the AIMS Office.
  • Need directions, map links, address, building, and room number/location of your audition?   See Singer/Pianist audition site details.
  • Limited scholarship awards and work/study grants are available to help you attend AIMS. Please discuss how you plan to finance AIMS in Graz with the AIMS Representative.
  • Read about ways you can raise money and about scholarships offered by AIMS:  See You Can Afford AIMS in Graz.
Phase II. Acceptance and Application for Admission to AIMS
Your status will be communicated to you by email within a few days after your audition.
Based on your audition, three types of acceptances are made:
  • Early acceptance - you are accepted for the AIMS in Graz Experience
  • Provisional acceptance - AIMS’ decision is made after completion of all auditions
  • Space-available acceptance - your acceptance is likely if space is available.
(The class is limited to 120-125 singers and pianists.)
Confirmation of your acceptance will start about April 15.
Participants in all three acceptance categories must apply for admission within 3 weeks after their audition dates. Your Acceptance Email will have instructions and the web link to apply. To hold your place at AIMS in Graz, pay the $200 application fee and $175 deposit. If AIMS is unable to accommodate you this year, these fees will be refunded or you may carry over to next year the amounts you pay and those you receive as donations from your fund raising activities.

Information collected through the Application for Admission web site includes your contact information between now and July 1, passport information and health insurance coverage. You will also be asked to read and accept certain AIMS policies. You are not accepted until this Phase is completed and fees are paid. Phase IV. Performance Planning

Pianists
Pianists choose either Concert or Opera Studio participation. You can specify your teacher/coach preferences when this phase opens. Please review the Piano Program Information; then Major Events Calendar, 2008 Program Plans and Faculty biographies on this web site. One of the AIMS Artistic Directors will arrange for you to contact the appropriate person of the Collaborative Piano Program to discuss repertoire.

Singers
Phase IV is designed to help you develop specific goals for study and performance. Depending on your stage of development or immediate plans, performance may or may not be important. Working on vocal technique, learning German, studying diction, expanding your repertoire, improving your auditioning or stage artistry skills, etc., may better use the amazing variety of people and resources available at AIMS. Set your priorities after studying the courses, lessons and coaching available. See Course Descriptions for Singers. Read what AIMS Alumni say about AIMS to learn what experiences were meaningful to them.

Phase IV registration covers your Faculty Hearing repertoire and your performance and teacher/coach preferences.

  • You will be asked to provide the repertoire you will perform from memory at your Faculty Hearing in Graz. The purpose of the Hearings is to 1) assign teachers and coaches, 2) allow the faculty to assess your current status and 3) cast the first two concert performances.
  • Review the Major Events Calendar, a chronological list of planned events, to see the performance opportunities. (Check regularly for updates.)
  • Read the Program Plans to see where your repertoire and voice type might fit into programs with orchestra or piano accompaniment. Check Program Plans regularly for changes. Don’t overlook operetta concerts asopportunities to sing in German. Every performance offers the opportunity to work on repertoire with your voice teacher, coach, stage artistry coach, diction coach, et al. See the Performance Preferences questionnaire for the information you will be asked to provide.
  • Review the Faculty Biographies to assist you in choosing a voice teacher and coach (see Teacher/Coach Preference).

Suggestion: print out the Events Calendar, Program Plans, Performance Preference and Teacher/Coach Preference pages to discuss with your teacher.

You will be notified when the Performance Planning web site opens. Login using your Last Name and Confirmation Code (provided by email) to list your Faculty Hearing repertoire and Performance choices. You can make changes up to July 1. Do not depart for Graz without providing this information online.
