Rick Barrantes Agüero

Rick Barrantes Agüero is the 1st Prize Winner of the Püchner Competition COFCAM 2015 and a Quarterfinalist at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition 2021. He has played as a soloist with the GGS Chamber Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of Guatemala, University of Costa Rica Symphonic Band, and Alajuela Concert Band. Mr. Barrantes is currently the Principal Bassoon of the New Jersey Chamber Orchestra and has appeared as guest principal bassoon with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and guest bassoonist with the APEX Ensemble, Symphony in C, Toronto Concert Orchestra, Niagara Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. He has previously played principal bassoon with the AIMS Festival Orchestra, Brevard Music Center Institute, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and Youth Orchestra of Central America.

Mr. Barrantes serves as bassoon and chamber music teacher at the Community Music Scholars Program at Temple University, bassoon and musicianship teacher at The Music School of Delaware, and is a Teaching Artist at the New Groove Music Studio in Philadelphia. He previously served as bassoon teacher in the SiNEM (El Sistema) Costa Rica, School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón, and ANC Young Music Camp in Panama City. He has also taught at the University of the Pacific, Guaranda International Music Festival, and National Music Conservatory (Honduras). He earned degrees from the National Music Institute of Costa Rica, the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and Temple University in Philadelphia. He is currently working on his Doctor of Musical Arts at Temple University, with a major in bassoon performance and a minor in conducting.
