Andy Liu
Horn
Chinese-Canadian French Horn player Andy Liu is an incoming sophomore student at Rice University majoring in Horn Performance and Sport Management. He began his studies at age 10 in Shanghai with Liu Chuang, third horn of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, before pursuing his musical studies further at the Colburn School Music Academy as its first-ever brass student, under the tutelage of Andrew Bain. In 2024, Andy was accepted into the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and currently studies under distinguished professor Liz Freimuth and privately with Bill VerMeulen. Over the years, Andy sought additional mentorship from Rob Johnson, Gail Williams, Frank Demmler and Andrew Pelletier.
Andy is the laureate of several competitions such as the Inaugural Asia International Youth Music Competition and the International Horn Society Youth Solo Horn Competition. In addition, he was invited to participate in the 17th International Tchaikovsky Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Having a wealth of orchestral experience, Andy performs regularly with the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra and, during his Colburn years, with the Colburn Orchestra, under the batons of Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Jerry Hou, Bill Eddins, Stéphane Dèneve and other renowned conductors. His performances brought him to world-class concert venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, SOKA Performing Arts Center, State Academic Capella of St. Petersburg, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Shanghai Concert Hall and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre.
