Katrina Johnson
Violin
Katrina Johnson is a Canadian violinist from Calgary, Alberta, where she was raised in a musical family. She recently completed her Master of Music in Violin Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, studying under Juliana Athayde. While in Rochester, she appears regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as an auditioned substitute.
Before attending Eastman, Katrina earned an Advanced Certificate in Performance from the University of Toronto, studying with Mark Fewer, and a Bachelor of Music with Honours in Orchestral Performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where she studied with Marcelle Mallette and minored in Musical Applications of Science & Technology.
Following her first year at Eastman, Katrina held a one-year contract with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra in Canada during their 2023-2024 season, where she successfully auditioned for a permanent section violin position. She will return to Thunder Bay to begin that new chapter in the fall of 2025.
Her orchestral experience also includes performances with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Niagara Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Toronto Contemporary Music Ensemble, as well as formative years in the McGill Symphony Orchestra and Calgary Youth Orchestra. Her festival work spans North America and Europe, with appearances at the National Arts Centre Orchestra Mentorship Program (Canada), Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (Germany), National Orchestral Institute and Festival (USA), National Academy Orchestra of Canada, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Domaine Forget, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute. She served as concertmaster for the 2022 Naxos recording at NOI under conductor JoAnn Falletta.
