Ana Djukic-Cocks
German Language
The daughter of a diplomat, Ana Djukic-Cocks lived in Hungary, Serbia, and Germany as a child giving her both near-native fluency in Hungarian and German, but also a love for languages with a special interest in grammar. Spanish was the one language she learned for the pure fun of learning, inspired by her father’s time in Argentina before she was born. She worked as a translator and interpreter for the Yugoslav Embassy in Bonn for six years, after returning to Germany in her twenties, before leaving for the University of Cincinnati where she completed her PhD in 1994. While there her supervisors often chose her classes to showcase to visiting professors. Ana taught in the total immersion German course at Middlebury College starting in 1994 for thirteen summers which attracted undergraduate and graduate students from the nation’s top universities and relished the opportunity to teach such motivated and talented students. Ana’s scholarly focus has always been on foreign language acquisition and pedagogy. In the last few years, Ana has enjoyed returning to the city of Cincinnati, home of her alma mater, in the capacity of AP Reader of German. The bulk of her career has been spent in central New York at SUNY Oswego as an associate professor of German in the Department of Modern Languages.
