Patricia Craig
Soprano

Renowned American operatic soprano and voice teacher, Patricia Craig, joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory in 1990 and joined the voice faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2010. Her performing career spans over three decades of major roles in the leading opera houses of the world. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1978 as Marenka in The Bartered Bride under the baton of Musical Director James Levine. Met audiences heard her for the next 12 seasons (both on the stage and over the radio on the Texaco Saturday broadcasts) in a variety of leading roles in operas including Madame Butterfly, Dialogues of the Carmelites, La Boheme, and Mahagonny.

A specialist in Puccini and Verdi heroines, Ms. Craig’s other operatic credits include performances with the New York City Opera; Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Italy; the Festival of Two Worlds in both Spoleto, Italy, and Charleston, South Carolina; L’Opera de Marseilles, Frankfort Opera, Frankfort, Germany; and the companies of Cincinnati, Miami, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Concert performances include Pique Dame with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa.

In addition to her private voice studio, and master classes around the country and abroad, she continues her summer teaching at, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, Chautauqua Institute, Chautauqua NY. and The Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI), where she collaborated for many years with her late husband, the world famous Wagnerian tenor and voice teacher Richard Cassilly.

Ms. Craig serves as an advisor on the board’s of the Boston Lyric Opera and the Boston Academy of Music. She also is in demand as a competition adjudicator for organizations including the Metropolitan Opera, the Baltimore Opera, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Patricia Craig received her B.S. degree from Ithaca College. She went on to post-graduate studies in opera at the Manhattan School of Music, and gained her first critical vocal acclaim as a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She now numbers, with pride, her own students who have gained recognition in this competition, as well as others who are singing with the major opera companies of the United States and abroad. Ms. Craig has studied and collaborated with prominent artists including Donald Craig, James de Blasis, Diane Richardson, Marinka Gurevitch, Joan Dorneman, Warren Jones, Martin Katz, Henry Lewis, Italo Tajo, Magda Olivero and Jeffrey Tate to name but a few.
